CATCHING DRILLS
 
 PUBLISHED BY OHS VARSITY BASEBALL
 
Equipment:  Catcher's gear including:  shin guards, chest protector, cup, mitt, and mask. 
 
Training Tools:  home plate, juggs machine (optional), whiffle balls, lite flight balls, and/or tennis balls. 

Steps
for Proper Drill Work
 
1.)  Review "Importance of Catching"
2.)  Review body position and target positioning
3.)  Review stance (Runners On Base vs. No Runners On)
4.)  Review blocking technique - ball in the dirt
    a.  Shoulder/Body Position - over knees
    b.  Play ball back into the plate using correct angles on the plate
    c.  Use hands to pick up ball after successful block
    d.  Find baserunners
5.)  Drill Work Begins
    a.  Coach stands approximately 30 feet in front of the catcher
    b.  Coach will then throw a ball of their choice (whiffle balls, tennis balls, and/or lite flight balls) in the dirt or in front of the catcher
    c.  Throw strikes at times to keep the catcher honest - no cheating
    d.  Juggs machine may be used
