History of VFW Baseball

VFW Baseball has emerged as one of Minnesota and the nation's finest Youth Baseball programs.  The first State Tournament was held in 1955 where West St. Paul Post #4462 captured the first title.  Participation grew and it wasn't long before baseball champions were being crowned in a number of the state's Districts as a prelude to the Grand Finale - The State Tournament.

Charles "Chuck" Loftus began his tenure as State Youth Director for the Department of MN Veterans of Foreign Wars.  In this position, he promoted participation in all of the state's nine districts.  Because a nine-team tournament presented more than a few scheduling problems, the Host Post concept was employed.  Under the current set-up, the team sponsored by the VFW Post hosting the tournaments is automatically given a tournament birth that rounds the tournament to ten teams.

Today, MN Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts support a total of 121 teams throughout the state.  Post 3723 in Owatonna has supported the program year after year and currently gives financial support that allows players in grades 9 and 10 the opportunity to play in tournaments and to participate in District 1.  Approximately, 20 - 25 players continue to participate in a 45 game schedule that promotes player development and a strong baseball culture that encompasses excellence, respect, honor in serving others, and integrity.
